I asked for a supporting source to say that John Paul II used the term "culture of life" in Centisimus Annus. BrianCUA you removed the tag without providing the source. Can you explain why please? Thanks. Contaldo80 (talk) 20:49, 3 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
From the Barry source: "On the moral front, pro-life proponents have made effective use of the phrase culture of life to refocus the abortion debate on the unborn's life as opposed to the woman's right to choose. ... The term culture of life is generally attributed to Pope John Paul II, who coined the phrase in the mid-1990s..." --Slugger O'Toole (talk) 14:58, 10 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Trasz has changed the lede. Since 2018 it has begun "A culture of life describes a way of life based upon the belief that human life at all stages from conception through natural death is sacred." Trasz changed it to read that "A culture of life is a Catholicpropaganda term to describe..." I reverted, citing NPOV. Rather than come to talk, Trasz reverted back to his preferred version. There are a couple issues with his edits.
First of all, propaganda is clearly a pejorative term that fails NPOV. Secondly, as the lede itself mentions, while the phrase was popularized in Catholic circles, it is used by people in other faith traditions as well. It is also used in non-religious contexts, including by politicians and rappers. It is not just a "Catholic phrase," much less Catholic propaganda. Finally, the best practice is to follow WP:BRD. Instead of simply edit warring, I encourage Trasz to work here to come up with a new consensus if he thinks the verbiage should be changed. --Slugger O'Toole (talk) 19:12, 11 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The fact that propaganda is a pejorative term doesn't mean we can't use it. We should call a spade a spade. "Culture of life" is a textbook example of propaganda and newspeak, intended to degrade people who disagree with catholic ideology. The fact that other circles picked up that term doesn't matter - it's still being used in its original purpose. Obviously I fully agree about working out a consensus. Trasz (talk) 22:11, 11 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Trasz, You're right that it doesn't mean we can't use it. However, if we want to then we need to show WP:RSes doing so. We should not be calling a spade a spade. We should be reporting that others are calling it a spade. Given that there was a consensus for the previous lede, and that your bold edit was reverted, would you please self-reverting per WP:BRD so that we and others might come to a new consensus here on talk? Slugger O'Toole (talk) 02:41, 12 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
As much as I hate to say it, you do have a point there. Let’s do that, and I’ll look for proper sources afterwards. Thanks! Trasz (talk) 22:19, 12 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
